When Bees Become Structural Pests

Bee Control

Honey Bees

For the most part, honey bees are a beneficial pest and play an important and necessary role in pollinating flowers and agricultural crops. Bee pollination is especially vital to the citrus groves in Southwest Riverside County.

Honey bees are social insects and live as a colony in bee hives. Honey bees are not aggressive, unlike Africanized honey bees.

Honey bees often construct nests in trees, but when the colony gets too large or has a failing queen, honey bees will begin to swarm to find a new location. Honey bees usually only swarm once a year, although Africanized honey bees can swarm more frequently. Once a new queen is produced, she will leave with a large percentage of the worker bees.

Honey bees often construct nests in trees, however, there are times when bees become a structural pest and invade homes, attics, wall voids, roofs and even motorhomes. Bees can temporarily cluster onto a structure when they are leaving the nest and looking for a new location. They usually move on within 24-48 hours. At times the permanent location can include homes, attics, wall voids, roofs and even motorhomes. In these circumstances, bee control is necessary, especially when the bees present a danger to people, animals or businesses.

If you wish to deter bees from coming into your yard either because of an allergy or fear, you can discourage them by following means:

  • Sanitation - remove soda cans or any sugar or water that may attract them, including hummingbird feeders
  • Habitat Modification - remove flowering vegetation away from the structure, including doorways and walkways. Make sure your yard is free of flowering weeds and white clover

It is advised to contact a licensed pest professional before attempting to control bees on your own. Our trained bee experts at AmeriGuard Pest Defense are available to answer any questions. You can contact us at (951) 652-0505 to schedule a bee treatment service or send us a request online.
